Summary of responsibilities:

At ASI, I server as the most senior level infrastructure architect and manager of Systems administration.  As an architect its my role to ensure the best possible technology is put in place for ASI, and that its implemented in the best possible manner.  As a manager, it’s my role to guide my team to be the best possible admins they can be, and to ensure, projects are completed on time within the required budget.

  • Lead and mentor a team of three admins. I hold regular meetings, host various training sessions, and provide a foundation to drive ASI’s success, through their personal achievements.
  • Perform annual reviews for my team, as well as provide feedback year round.
  • Manage all vendor relationships. Anywhere from simple check in’s to facilitating the purchase of a new solution.
  • Assist with fiscal year budget planning. This includes scoping out costs for new projects, and upgrading existing infrastructure.
  • Present new ideas and solutions to multiple teams and CTO, putting together power points, visio’s and other documentation to explain new or existing solutions.
  • Designed and implemented ASI’s new virtualization platform, based on VMware. This solution included migrating from a platform built around standalone Hyper-V systems, as well as p2v’ing ASI’s 100+ physical servers.  Current solution consists of 35 VMhosts, and 700+ VM’s.
  • Implemented an iSCSI SAN infrastructure, that exceeded ASI’s performance and capacity requirements, while staying below budget.
  • Assisted in designing a 10G infrastructure based on Cisco’s Nexus 5596up switches. This enabled consolidated network infrastructure for our virtualization hosts (reduced cabling), while providing higher throughput and lower latency for our network applications and storage.
  • Designed a virtual infrastructure capable of supporting our most demanding SQL servers, while enabling us to consolidate licensing for our lower capacity physical SQL servers. Better availability and performance has been achieved by virtualizing our “never to be virtualized” SQL servers.
  • Implemented SQL Always on Availability groups and Failover clustering. Enabling SQL to be highly available at an application level and reduce data loss caused by failures.
  • Lead a Windows XP to Windows 7 migration project. This project was also used as a jumping point to desktop automation.  Utilizing SmartDeploy and Group Policy Preferences, we were able to automate most aspects of our desktop infrastructure.  We reduced the number of images we maintain from 10 to 3, and shortened our deployment time from 3 hours to 1 hour.
  • Evaluated and implemented ASI’s first holistic monitoring solution, based on LogicMonitor.
  • I overhauled ASI’s backup solution. Migrating primary backup responsibility from Veeam to CommVault, and also implemented a more resilient backup storage solution (DotHill SAN) instead of DAS.
  • Implemented a holistic patch and maintenance schedule. Enabling ASI to ensure all systems are patched and updated routinely.
  • Automate various provisioning and routine tasks via PowerShell.
  • Provided tier 2 support and mentoring for help desk staff, correcting escalated issues and training staff on standardized administration processes.
  • Lead technology design and implementation on IT projects, interfacing with business representatives to gather requirements and assess business needs.

 

Senior Systems Engineer

The Pew Charitable Trusts | June 2005 – March 2012

Summary of responsibilities:

Engineer and maintain Pew’s server and desktop infrastructure. This includes all Microsoft services, VMware, SAN, Citrix, and other third party solutions.  Additionally, my responsibilities also includes high level network design, datacenter management, resolving help desk escalations, and providing subject matter expertise to staff of all levels for various projects.  I also manage and mentor junior staff, helping them to meet personal and institutional goals.

  • Upgraded Pew to version 5 of the vSphere suite and implemented many of the new feature included with this. Pew now has distributed switches, StorageDRS, and storage IO enabled.
  • Leading a datacenter swap. Flipping our primary datacenter from Philadelphia to Washington DC and conversely our DR datacenter from DC to Philadelphia.
  • Leading a Windows 7 / Office 2010 migration project. Currently 300/700 systems have been migrated successfully to Windows 7.  New techniques such as Application Virtualization, universal imaging, and generic software have led to the success so far.
  • Designed server and desktop infrastructure to accommodate a rapidly growing international company. In five years, Pew grew from 150 users and 40 servers to 700 users and 130 servers.
  • Converted over 90% of physical server infrastructure to virtual machines, initially consolidating 40 servers on three VMWare ESX servers. Scaled virtual infrastructure to accommodate 140 servers running across five ESX servers.
  • Managed all aspects of Active Directory and Exchange infrastructure, including such projects as upgrading the domain from 2003 to 2008
  • Built and managed a Citrix Presentation server environment, enabling remote access to Pew’s common applications.
